Crystal Ballin’: I Got My Tarot Cards Read, and Here’s What I’m Doing for My Well-Being

I’ve always been intrigued by “outside forces” influencing my everyday vibes. From encapsulating full moon energy to finding out what’s happening in my astrology birth chart (watch out for this Leo with a side of Libra), there’s something magical about embracing another level of intuition. 

But to be honest, my intuition—my fiery flame—has been a little off, thanks to the first Mercury retrograde of this new decade. My Leo mane is caught in its crosshairs, as are my emotions. Help! What’s a girl got to do to survive? My horoscope was shedding light into my feelings, but what I really needed was an outside force to help me get back on track. Enter tarot cards.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten my cards read (but if you’re up for it, I highly recommend), and there were a few things the reader reminded me of prior to our session. Bringing my notebook was key. With an open mind and a pocket full of questions, I got my cards read three (yes, three) times. Here’s what happened and how I learned to use it to better my well-being.


Clarity spread

Because my head (and heart) is spinning.   

The reading: Clarity Spread
The purpose of this reading was to shed light on a current challenge of mine (think: relationship struggles). See, I told ya retrograde was messing with my energy. A little card shuffling, three knocks, and my four chosen cards later, I laid out just that—some divine clarity. So, what did I get, and what am I going to do now? Keep reading to find out. 

My cards
Devil – I’m always cautious about this card. My tarot reader quickly reminded me that this demonic creature was in the reverse position, representing freedom from what’s holding me back. As she put it, “it’s time to light shit on fire.” Guess I need to show the devil who’s boss by kicking ass in a F45 class.  

Two of Cups – There’s a lot of love with this card. Two full cups illustrate—you guessed it—“fullness” in my current relationship. Sometimes, I’m distracted from that. My tarot reader alluded to the ebb and flow of our union. Maybe I do need to book that couple’s massage this weekend.  

Five of Wands – Oh man, the higher beings are really nailing the relationship stuff. Unsure of how to interpret this card, my tarot reader explains it means conflict—and thanks to Mercury retrograde, I am extra feisty with my opinions. Good news though, since the card is inverted, the drama is on its way out. I’m so ready to let it go (and flow) during my next yoga practice

Three of WandsWait, another wands card? My tarot reader noted that this card stands for foresight—and there’s a portal, an opening, for opportunity. So, whatever is off in my relationship realm, there’s light on the horizon. Put those shades on because I’m ready to detox and get my glow on with a facial

 

Big Moon

Feeling big new moon energy. 

The reading: New Moon Spread
A suggestion for my tarot reader, this reading is perfect when welcoming a new moon—and what you want to bring into this new celestial cycle. I know I want to bring in positivity, but I need to let go of some life stuff I’ve been holding on to. We’ve all got stuff, right? 

My cards
King of Wands
– I can’t escape the wands. Maybe it’s a sign. But this is the wands card I want in this sense, because it taps into my forceful, bold nature. Remember I’m a Leo. According to my tarot reader, the new moon is going to electrify everything I do. Talk about a big energy. But first I have to let some things go. What better way to shake off what’s holding me back and show off my dynamic energy than with a one-two punch in boxing class.  

The Tower – This card instantly drew me in with its chaos-like illustration. Part of the tower/tree image was broken, but its base remained rooted in (and to) the ground. My tarot reader let me know that though this card exemplifies distress, it also leaves room for something new and beautiful to flourish. I think it’s time to reset my focus with a mindful meditation practice.  
 

Past, present, future

Where I’ve been and where I am going. 

The reading: Past, Present, Future
A tale as old as time, this classic tarot reading is always a go-to when I want a glimpse into how everything I’ve done is influencing my now—and what’s next. When my tarot reader asked if I wanted to close our session with this spread, I wasn’t about to deny a little crystal ball-type action during my afternoon. What I quickly learned is your energy really does travel, through time, that is.

PAST
Daughter of Cups – Representative of renewal, this card was tapping into my creative spirit, but my current life “fears” were blocking my creativity from shining through. Maybe it was my anxiety about buying a house. Or being afraid of losing a loved one. Whatever it is, I knew I needed to find an outlet to express myself. Now I am starting to think aerial yoga might help me clear my head —and defy gravity. What’s more creative than that?

PRESENTSon of CupsTwo cup cards in a row? As my tarot reader explained what this card meant (balance, sensitivity), it was totally in tune with my current state. By being hard on myself, I wasn’t allowing myself to find balance. And I wasn’t allowing compassion for the way I feel. Yes, us Leos can be selfish, but in this case, I needed to give myself a little love. Nothing says self-love like a deep stretch and deep, belly breaths in Yin Yoga.  

FUTUREEight of Swords – Now, this is not the card I wanted to get for my future. Trapped. Confined. Restricted. This girl doesn’t want her future to be limited. According to my tarot reader, this card shows how important it is that I let go of what is holding me in back in the past and present. By doing this, I can awaken my intuition and develop a more empowered mindset. I will then be stronger and more confident than I envisioned. Sounds like I need to take that focused energy to a barre class where I can lengthen and strengthen my mind, body, and soul.

Sweat Redemption: 5 Tips for Getting Back Into Your Hot Yoga Practice

If you’ve ever taken a hot yoga class, you know it’s always going to be one thing—outrageously hot. Not the “let’s hang by the pool and get that sun-kissed glow” kind of hot either. I’m talking that “I can't believe I have this much sweat in my body” and “I may or may not pass out” kind of hot. It’s nothing to mess around with, and after a year or so of not being able to go, it’s easy to forget just how serious that heat can be.

To get the maximum enjoyment and benefits out of your heated yoga classes, you need to prepare yourself before and take care of yourself afterward. Luckily, I’ve been taking some classes (sweating enough for the both of us) and I’ve listed my five favorite must-dos to help you readjust to your heated classes and get back to the hot yoga summer that we all want.

1. Go at your own pace

Heated classes are difficult in nature. The normal difficulty of regular poses is mixed in with the added challenges of sweating and dealing with the humidity and the heat (at times, I’ve seen the thermostat climb to 108 degrees—yikes!). Depending on what type of yoga class you’re taking (sculpt, Bikram, power vinyasa), the difficulty level and temperature are going to vary. It’s also important to remember that each person in the room is going to practice in a way that’s unique to them. Hours slept, hydration levels, food intake, and different lifestyles are all contributing factors that make our practices different. What you practice on your mat is your own––trust your body and only do what feels right to you.  And remember, it’s okay to take breaks!

2. Hydrate like your life depends on it (honestly, it might)

The rise in temperature mixed in with the humidity that we all know and love creates the perfect recipe for sweating—like A LOT. You go into a heated class dry and come out feeling like you just took a dip in the pool. Before heated classes, I had no idea it was physically possible to sweat that much. If you’re going to a heated class, especially after a long break, it’s easy to forget just how much you might sweat. Is it possible to lose that much water if you haven’t consumed it first? Trust me, going into your heated class super hydrated is going to make a world of difference and help you feel good throughout your practice. And don’t forget to take some sips of H2O while you’re practicing!  

3. Nourish your body

Heated classes are challenging, but I can’t stop going. Nothing quite compares to overcoming the challenge— and experiencing the cleanse my body feels after I’m done. It’s the perfect blend of hard and rewarding, but I couldn’t do it if my body wasn’t properly nourished. On the days I know I have a heated class booked; I like to make sure I am eating right. I make sure to take my vitamins and fuel my body with fruits, vegetables, and my favorite superfood shake. I hold off on food about an hour before my practice, so I feel comfortable. After the class, I like to replenish with a big protein shake (boosted with collagen to aid with muscle recovery and skin elasticity). There is no one-way path for properly nourishing your body but making sure you’re fueled for the challenge of a heated class is essential for getting the most out of your practice and feeling good on and off your mat.

4. Replenish those electrolytes

Increasing and maintaining your water intake on the days you take a heated class is important, but sometimes you need something a little extra. If you’re sweating that much, you’re basically an athlete (at least in my book) and if you’re performing like a rockstar yogi, you need to hydrate like one as well. That means replenishing those lost electrolytes. Reward yourself and your body for the hard work and treat yourself to your favorite drink. I switch off between electrolyte-boosting drinks and coconut water depending on what I’m in the mood for that day. Adding these to my post-practice self-care routine has helped me feel more hydrated after and ready to take on the world again after especially sweaty classes.

5. Bring the right equipment

Usually, a yoga mat is all you need for your practice––but heated classes are a different ballgame. I’ve gone with just a mat, and I’ve slipped all over the place. Let me tell you, there’s nothing worse than having sweat drip all over the place while you’re trying to hold a pose that makes you grip your mat for dear life (never again). Make sure you bring a towel to place over your mat, this will help with support and grip. Bringing a smaller towel is also a good idea. You can use the smaller towel to dry yourself off during water breaks or whenever you’re feeling just a bit too sweaty. This is a small step that makes a world of difference during those super-hot classes.

So, there you have it. Five of my favorite tips (more like lifesavers) that have helped me readjust to those heated classes I love so much. Getting back into it is a challenge for us all, so know you’re not alone. No matter where you’re at in your practice, remember to be kind and gentle to yourself––celebrating your health and your body’s ability to do what you love. We’re all just getting back out there, together.
